Understanding culture and needs
Through a series of discovery workshops, we unpacked the values and ethos behind the business, identifying key requirements and needs for staff, and their approach to building strong client relationships.
These findings helped define our overall plan and, in close partnership with our sister company Valmont, determine how our design strategy would become a uniquely-shaped environment to challenge industry norms.
Ensuring the appropriate ambience
The design style promoted a brighter, more welcoming palette, incorporating warm timbers, upwash lighting and greenery to lift the previously dark lift lobby and entrance spaces. Soft lounge seating and even a self-serve sparkling water station were planned to provide an invitational, relaxed feel at front of house.
Large pivot doors would help present a more open environment, and help frame the external cityscape backdrop when left open.
Providing flexibility and connectivity
Critical to a well-designed office environment is how different areas can support different types of work, while ensuring an overall feeling of connectedness.
Drawing on our findings from the workshops, we set out spaces that would cater to large and small group gatherings and individual focus, incorporating a mix of function spaces, meeting and focus rooms. Operable walls and large pivot doors would enable spaces to transition quickly, while interconnecting stairs ensured easy access across the space.
Acting sustainably
Sustainable design solutions were implemented across a range of elements, with consideration for maintaining sustainable proportions of the built environment. We identified existing elements that were of suitable quality and ensured that they were retained and/or refurbished. We carefully considered finishes and fittings so that items were sustainability sourced with low impact. Connection to country was respected in this way, as well as prioritising the selection of indigenous supplies and art.

Advancing design
Each of our projects places trust and relationship building at the core — aspects the team at McCullough Robertson know well. The team was engaged throughout the design journey, and we encouraged them to think differently as we guided them through the process. The successful outcome demonstrates the critical importance of mutual respect and understanding in any project.
